For the design-inclined, path lighting can be the ideal way to show off different parts of your yard. Got prize-winning plants? How about expertly kept shrubbery? With path lighting, you can highlight the best parts of your front and back yards just like you would with accent lighting inside your home.

Meanwhile, if you're more interested in entertaining guests outside, path lighting can be the ideal way to provide ambient lighting. Since the lights are low to the ground, you don't have to worry about too much illumination causing glare or leading to discomfort for party and dinner guests.

Beyond these benefits, path lighting can also provide increased safety and security. First, it makes it safer for house members and guests to walk around your yard without fear of tripping and falling in the dark. Second, more light equals more security for your home, as criminals are far less likely to invade your space if it's well lit.

Different Styles for Every Taste

Just as with other types of lighting fixtures, path lighting are available in various styles.

"Path lighting isn't just an extra layer of lighting design for your home's exterior – it can provide numerous benefits."

One option is downlights. As the name implies, these fixtures are directed downward, making them perfect for accent lighting and avoiding glare.

Another choice is what's known as flush lights. Picture a recessed lighting fixture in reverse, as these lights are installed on the surface of a path and point upward

Bollard lights are also a popular option. These small pillars add a special flair to exterior lighting design and can provide a brighter source of light if your yard is particularly large.

Getting the Look Just Right

When installing path lighting, there are a few key factors to keep in mind.

For one, you'll want to make sure you have an even amount of lights on both sides of the path and at both ends. At the same time, it's important not to install too many lighting fixtures. This could lead to unwanted brightness and light pollution for your neighbors.

Also be mindful of the spacing of your path lights. You want fixtures to be far enough away from each other to avoid a constant stream of light. And while balance is important for an aesthetically pleasing look, if you want to avoid a runway appearance, try staggering lights.
